New Year’s Day Drags
From Sacramento Raceway Park

Mike Brundage, Cameron Park, CA, pocketed a cool grand for his win in Super Pro.

With Northern California nestled below a protective dome of high pressure, Sacramento Raceway Park’s immensely popular New Year’s Day Drags kicked off the track’s 2012 season under a beautiful blue sky. A shirt sleeved crowd of fans were  treated to plenty of thrilling and tightly contested racing as close to 200 sportsman competitors showed up to duke it out in Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman, Street, and Motorcycle classes. It was also race number one at Sacramento Raceway for those racers participating in the Summit E.T. Racing Series. Indexes for the classes are 7.00-11.99 for Super Pro; 10.00-13.99 for Pro; 12.00-19.99 for Sportsman; and, 7.50-15.99 for Super Pro Motorcycle. Last year, Steve Parrish of Richmond represented Sacramento Raceway (and Division 7) at the national finals held at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona.

For the New Year’s Day Drags, a purse of $4000 was up for grabs. Therefore, it was no surprise that some of the competitors looked a little edgy by the time it got around to the final rounds. Of the five classes contested, red lights settled two final rounds, and another was decided by the break out rule. Fair Oaks’ Ashley Barnes won Street with her hot pink ’71 Plymouth Scamp despite breaking out as a fidgety Scott Frick triggered a red bulb with his 2002 ‘Vette. Jesse Adams, no stranger to the winner’s circle, started his year with a victory in Pro ET when Danny Cole squeezed the gas pedal a little early, too. In Motorcycle, both finalists hit their dial-ins dead on, but Craig Holsey prevailed over Michael O’Neil with a superior reaction time. The last round of Sportsman was an equally tense affair. Chad Walker, locked in to his 13.32 dial in with his ’85 Chevy truck, saw the $400 pay out end up in Leslie Freeman’s pocket when he broke out with a 13.31. For her part, Freeman was right on with a 12.149 on a 12.10 dial in. No less exciting was the Super Pro final. In that race, Mike Brundage drove his ’01 Sarmento dragster to a win over Dennis Paz with a .002margin of victory.

Yuba City’s Jesse Adams won Pro with his K&N-backed ’69 Camaro.

When Scott Frick quickly lit both bulbs staging, it may have been his undoing. A more
deliberate Ashley Barnes then watched Scott throw away a nice 12.016 on a 12.00 DI to win
on his red light.

Craig Holsey won Motorcycle in a dominating fashion. After qualifying #1, Craig whipped
the field with sharp lights and a consistent bike.

Leslie Freeman, Galt, CA; ’79 Datsun; Winner in Sportsman;

Dennis Paz, Stockton CA; ’41 Willys; RU in Super Pro

Danny Cole, North Highlands CA; ’69 Camaro; RU in Pro ET

Chad Walker, Rio Linda CA; ’85 Chevy Truck; RU in Sportsman

Scott Frick; ’02 Corvette; RU in Street

Michael O’Neil, Sacramento CA; ’07 GSXR; RU in Motorcycle

Roger Holder’s True 10.5 ’00 Camaro makes an obscene amount of horsepower-
ran consistent 7.7s with speeds in the mid-190 mph range.

Ron Alves, Colusa, CA, was a semi-finalist in Motorcycle with his Kawasaki 1000.
